Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Strength and Conditioning for Sport

Excelsior delivers training for this qualification which is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications. Run over 3 days, this course is is a vocationally related qualification that provides candidates with an opportunity to study and be assessed for both the practical and theoretical aspects of Strength and Conditioning to groups of adults and children in an appropriate environment. The course does require home learning and also the planning and delivery of sessions with athletes.

What can candidates use the L1CCSC for?

The aim is to develop coaches that can assist in leading basic strength and conditioning sessions to improve sports performance with a broad range of athletes. The knowledge gained from this certificate will enable candidates to develop an understanding of safe, ethical and effective strength and conditioning coaching. It will qualify candidates to assist in coaching the skills and techniques of strength and conditioning, as identified in the Practical Syllabus. This includes the use of free weights to develop sports performance.

Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Strength and Conditioning for Sport

Excelsior delivers training for this qualification which is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications. Run over 5 days (or 3 days for Coaches who have accredited prior learning) this course is ideally aimed at Coaches who wish to gain knowledge about S&C and deliver programmes to their teams and athletes and for students who want to gain a vocational qualification in S&C. The course does require home learning and also the planning and delivery of sessions with athletes.

What can candidates use the L2CCSC for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as a strength and conditioning coach.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • As evidence towards the achievement of a Level 2 N/SVQ in Sport and Recreation.

Structure, delivery and assessment of the L2CCSC

Qualification Structure

The L2CCSC is one of the many optional pathways attached to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching. The Level 2 Certificate in Coaching is composed of four mandatory units and a number of sport-specific optional pathway units, one of which is coaching strength and conditioning for sport (optional unit 9). The combination of the strength and conditioning coaching unit with the four mandatory units creates the Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Strength and Conditioning for Sport. Candidates who have completed the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching via one optional pathway, may be able to claim APL for certain aspects of another pathway.

The qualification is composed of the following units:

  • Unit 1 - Coaching Principles and Ethics (QCA Unit No: J/103/1020)
  • Unit 2 - Plan Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: L/103/1021)
  • Unit 3 - Conduct Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: R/103/1022)
  • Unit 4 - Review Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: Y/103/1023)
  • Unit 9 - Coaching Strength and Conditioning (QCA Unit No: D/103/7650)

NB: To complete the L2CCSC, candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age. Additionally, they are required to have some knowledge or experience of strength and conditioning, or of coaching in other sports at this level. Prior to certification, candidates must have evidence of having undergone training for Emergency First Aid, which includes CPR.

It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L2CCSC should include a minimum of 90 notional guided learning hours.

Assessment

Internal assessment comprises a series of assessed tasks that explore candidates' understanding of:

  • coaching principles and ethics in strength and conditioning
  • the preparation required to deliver strength and conditioning coaching sessions
  • the delivery, review and evaluation of strength and conditioning coaching sessions.

One aspect of the internal assessment includes an observation of a planned practical coaching session and evaluation. There is also an internally assessed written assessment via a theory paper. Independent assessment comprises of an observed assessment of a strength and conditioning coaching session.

Next course starts July 1st. Cost £295, booking deadline May 28th. The course will be run on July 1st, 2nd, 15th, assessment is on August 26th and 27th. It is held at Streatham Sports centre, Exeter University.
