How do you coach a visual learner who is blind?

Posted On Monday, 06th February 2012 at 07:54

This came up last week in conversation with 2 of the England Blind Football Team. I was unable to physically demonstrate some exercises to Dan James the goalkeeper, (who is sighted) and is a clear example of someone who learns by watching.

Later that day I was working with Robin Williams (blind) who has never been able to see demos, so has to learn by auditory cues and feel.

How would I be able to coach Robin if he was a Visual learner like Dan?

This has resulted in a glut of material, each item claiming to have established some new result which may have useful implications in the development and performance of human athletes. There are often studies conducted with non-athletes as well, and the line between what could be considered medical research as opposed to what is known as sports science is not clearly defined.

Good Luck to two Excelsior athletes: Dan James and Robin Williams (TASS funded) who are competing this week in Turkey for the England blind football team.

They beat Thailand 4-0 yesterday, and have Germany to contend with today.

Speed training for football

I have been working extensively with both footballers over the last few months, especially on their speed training. It is important not only to be able to run fast when playing football, but also to change pace quickly.

Blind Football World Cup - England finish fourth.

Well done to Dan James (far left) and Robin Williams (kneeling far right)for their efforts in helping the England blind football team finish fourth in the World Cup.  I have trained both players through their TASS funding.

Robin especially has made vast improvements this year, and will hopefully benefit from a productive off season.  Dan has consistently been the fittest player on the squad over the last 2 years.
