Thanks to everyone who attended the Level 1 Strength and Conditioning for Sport Coaching Course this weekend. A great bunch of enthusiastic young people. (Oh and me and Malcolm Hanson the External Verifier who are not so young).
A few points and themes emerged from the course, as they always do, generated by the participants.
When asked what Strength and Conditioning meant to them, a couple of phrases popped up:
"Enabling the body to cope with the demands of the sport."
"Helping athletes reach their potential."
This sums up what we do quite well. What is also important is communicating with the athlete- it is not what we know, but how much the Athlete takes away and can absorb.
One thing that I have seen from Personal Trainers is the overuse of TLAs when communicating with people. "Work on your TVA band", or here is some "SAQ" or "how about some PNF?" This might seem knoweldgeable and informative, but it could just be baffling people with pseudo science.
We also worked on rapport building and getting to know people. A simple introduction and asking for someone's name and checking again, then using it to confirm will help you remember that name. This proved quite tricky for at least half of the attendees- some of whom had forgotten their own name when doing introductions!
Looking forward to seeing them Coach in a few weeks time.
