Case Study

Not sure how the consultancy works?
The following case study is an example of how Excelsior can help you achieve your goals.

Stage 1 A retired international fencer approached Excelsior with the goal of competing in the World Championships. An informal meeting was held at which overall goals were discussed and a brief medical and training history reviewed.

A further meeting was held with a musculoskeletal exam by the physiotherapist, dietary analysis conducted and a more specific timescale of events established. Initial training began with weight loss, lower body strengthening / mobility and cardiovascular fitness being the training goals.

Stage 2 The target weight loss of 31 kg was achieved in 1 year through a graded exercise programme and a controlled diet. A review of the goals and an assessment of current fitness meant that further progression could be made. Fencing specific fitness was the next target, concentrating on: lower body power; anaerobic fitness; and wrist mobility and strength.

Stage 3 After 3 months of specific fitness training, sufficient strength and mobility had been achieved to allow the fencer to start fencing classes twice a week. An introduction of basic mental skills was made, with visualisation, and confidence building being priorities. A hip injury meant a further visit to the physiotherapist, and an adjustment to the training routine was made, with greater emphasis on gluteus medius stability.

Stage 4 After 6 months of fencing classes, the fencer was keen to return to competition. A further 8kg of weight had been lost and confidence was high through regaining fitness and especially improving lower body strength, as well as the mental skills training. Competition strategies were discussed, including preparation, with the introduction of routines. Fitness training was periodised using a weekly undulating plan, with tapering for 2 weeks before the 1st competition. Goal setting focussed on process and performance goals, not the outcome, for the first 3 competitions.

The fencer had successfully lost 39kg of body weight, improved overall health, and returned stronger than when he left international competition. Preparation was structured and co-ordinated the mental, nutritional, and physical strategies, as well as remaining for the most part injury free.

As a client of Excelsior you will be able to receive the same expert advice, in an easy to understand format, specifically tailored to you or your team's needs.
